The Veterans Financial Assistance Program provides short-term and temporary financial emergency assistance to eligible veterans, veteran dependents, and surviving spouses. Through this grant-funded program, beneficiaries receive financial aid to stabilize housing and prevent displacement, including one-time utility payments for electric, gas, propane, water, sewer, and trash, as well as one-time rental or mortgage assistance covering past-due rent, mortgage payments, late fees, application fees, or security deposits.

Applicants must be an eligible veteran, a dependent of a veteran, or a surviving spouse. Financial need must be demonstrated by actively being behind on rent, mortgage payments, or household utilities. There is no set poverty or low-income threshold required to qualify. The expanded official service area covers 27 counties: Atascosa, Bandera, Brewster, Comal, Culberson, Dimmit, Edwards, Frio, Gillespie, Guadalupe, Hudspeth, Jeff Davis, Karnes, Kendall, Kerr, Kinney, La Salle, Live Oak, Maverick, McMullen, Medina, Presidio, Real, Uvalde, Val Verde, Wilson, and Zavala.
