ABLE Accounts, which are tax-advantaged savings accounts for individuals with disabilities and their families, were created as a result of the passage of the Stephen Beck Jr. Achieving a Better Life Experience Act of 2014, better known as the ABLE Act.

ABLE accounts help those with disabilities save money while remaining eligible for disability benefits.

Banking for people with disabilities:

  • Get direct deposits early

You must also meet one of the following criteria:

  • The disability began before age 46
  • The disability must be terminal or long-term (more than 12 months) and must cause “marked and severe  functional limitations.”
  • You are eligible for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) because of your disability; oR
  • A doctor has diagnosed you with a disability (physical or mental)
