Speech therapy in a hospital-based inpatient rehabilitation program focuses on communication, cognition, and swallowing disorders that result from neurological conditions, injuries, or medical events. Speech-language pathologists work with patients to improve speech, language comprehension, memory, problem-solving, and safe swallowing during their inpatient recovery.

Rehabilitation areas addressed through inpatient speech therapy include:

  • Neurological rehabilitation
  • Stroke recovery
  • Brain injury rehabilitation
  • Spinal cord injury-related communication or swallowing needs

Inpatient rehabilitation requires a physician referral and medical assessment establishing that the patient requires intensive, hospital-level rehabilitation therapy (typically 3 hours per day, 5 days per week) and continuous nursing supervision following a medical event, stroke, brain injury, or surgery.

Accepts most insurance plans, including Medicare, and covers inpatient rehabilitation. Check with your provider for specific requirements such as prior authorizations, network restrictions, or other considerations.
