ABLE Accounts, which are tax-advantaged savings accounts for individuals with disabilities and their families, were created as a result of the passage of the Stephen Beck Jr. Achieving a Better Life Experience Act of 2014 better known as the ABLE Act.
ABLE accounts help those with disabilities save money while remaining eligible for disability benefits.
Banking for people with disabilities:
- Save with ABLE
- Set spending limits
- Track your benefits
- Get direct deposits early
Who is eligible for an ABLE account?
The ABLE Act limits eligibility to individuals with disabilities with an age of onset of disability before turning 26 years of age. If you meet this age requirement and are also receiving benefits under SSI and/or SSDI, you are automatically eligible to establish an ABLE account.

Our Transitional Homes for Veterans program is designed as a gateway for stability and support for families working toward self-sufficiency.
Veteran transitional housing is offered by the Transitional Homes for Veterans program to help veteran families who are within 3 years of discharge and have served honorably. The program offers temporary, rent-free housing as well as financial education and support services to help families work toward self-sufficiency.
Upon selection, each family is assigned a caseworker and financial counselor who work with them to create personalized financial, educational, employment, and personal goal plans. Families gain knowledge on the home buying process, credit score improvement, debt payoff, emergency savings, and community engagement.
Although the program is rent-free, families are required to pay a monthly fee that will be refunded upon completion of the 2-3 year program. The refunded funds can be used for a significant down payment on a home of their own or other needs for their family in the community.
By providing transitional housing for veterans, the program aims to assist veterans in achieving self-sufficiency, purchasing their own home, and successful reintegration into their communities.
Honorably discharged veterans who are within 3 years of discharge. Veterans do not have to be injured or have a combat deployment to apply.

Transitioning to civilian life can be a daunting task for many veterans and military families. Operation Homefront's Transitional Housing (Apartments) program provides rent-free apartments for veterans who have honorably discharged within the past 4 years.
Introducing Operation Homefront’s Transitional Housing (Apartments) program, which offers veterans a rent- and utilities-free apartment for one year, along with access to employment and financial counselor services to help them achieve stability and chart a path to long-term success post-military.
This initiative provides a stable living environment for veterans as they adjust to civilian life, giving them a chance to focus on their goals and build a solid foundation for their future.
We believe that removing the financial burden of rent and utilities will help veterans to focus on achieving stability and success.
Our committee will consider several factors when selecting an applicant, such as working towards financial stability, connection to the community where the apartment is located, and family size. We want to ensure that veterans who are chosen for this program are set up for success and have the best possible chance of thriving in their new environment.
Veterans do not have to be injured or have a combat deployment to apply.
- Veteran, with or without family within 4 years of discharge
- Veteran, within 200 miles of Home of Record preferred
- Veteran, with honorable discharge (to include general under honorable conditions)
- Veteran, who is not eligible for retirement pay
Our Transitional Housing (Apartments) are currently located in Frederick, MD, Columbia, MD, Atlanta, GA, San Antonio, TX, and North Salt Lake City, Utah.
At-A-Glance:
Best for-Honorably discharged veterans within 4 years of discharge.
Length of stay-12 months
Avg processing time-30-45 days
Veterans will be required to pay a security deposit and pet deposit (if applicable), but Operation Homefront will cover rent and utilities.
Operation Homefront’s Transitional Housing (Villages) program allows eligible service members to live rent-free while they go through the transition process of medically seperating from the military.
Upon placement, Operation Homefront’s counselors meet with each military family every 30 days to review their financial situation, determine where they are in the transition process, review their attendance in the required workshops and classes, and determine their ability to live on their own.
Once the families have become self-sufficient, the counselors help them find suitable housing in the area they intend to live on a permanent basis. By the end of the program, veterans and their families should have VA benefits in place, debt significantly reduced, and emergency savings in place.
For those seeking temporary housing during their transition to civilian life, Operation Homefront’s Transitional Housing (Villages) program is a great option to consider. With its fully furnished apartments, complete with full utility services, internet access, cable TV, telephone service, monthly financial counseling, and case management support, this program provides much-needed stability during a challenging time.
San Antonio program: serves those primarily being treated at Joint Base San Antonio and Audie Murphy VA Hospital.

Case Management
Following the ACT model, we have case management teams that provide services to all of the clients assigned to the team. Each client has multiple case managers working with them on a weekly rotation.
Our clients benefit by having multiple direct care staff providing input and strategies to best assist them reach their goals. Our clients have continuity of care when a case manager may be absent due to illness or vacation, as well as moving to a different position and no longer providing case management services. Each team has a Team Leader who coordinates the recovery and treatment plan of each client with the case managers and coordinates with the other community providers the client is utilizing for services.
Psychiatrist
We have agreements with psychiatrists to see clients who are receiving services from True MHS. We do not provide psychiatric services directly through True MHS. Our agreements with psychiatrists enable us to schedule an initial appointment within a few days of intake to our case management services, rather than clients waiting several months for an initial appointment.
This is extremely beneficial for our new clients who begin our services following an inpatient hospital admission. The client can be seen within 7 days after their discharge date for their follow-up psychiatric appointment. Then the client will be scheduled with the psychiatrist for monthly follow-up appointments. If a client has an outpatient psychiatrist that they have a relationship with and want to continue their services, we are still able to provide case management services and the client does not need to change doctors.
To help our clients achieve success, our case managers:
- Coordinate the transition from the hospital after discharge to the client’s home
- Teach coping strategies for experienced symptoms
- Teach awareness of triggers for experienced symptoms
- Teach coping strategies to address triggers
- Educate about the benefits of taking medications
- Assist and educate clients to complete doctor appointments
- Assist and educate clients to fill prescriptions at pharmacies
- Substance abuse education and assistance with rehabilitation
- Teach interpersonal and social skills
- Help secure safe housing
- Teach budgeting and money management skills
- Educate about community resources and how to access them
- Assist clients access resources for employment
- Assist clients access resources for education
- And teach our clients anything else they need for their recovery and success
In addition to case managers meeting directly with clients in the community, we provide 24-hour crisis support to assist our clients after business hours.
