Family Promise of Greater New Braunfels is a community response to family homelessness. We exist to support, guide and lift families out of homelessness and into safe housing, gainful employment, and independence.

Representatives from local churches have came together to address the need. Family Promise of Greater New Braunfels (FPGNB) is a partnership of churches that open their doors, classrooms, gyms, and hearts to serve as hospitality centers to families experiencing homelessness, partnering with professional case management and other community resources to offer temporary housing, meals, transportation and loving support.

When a family successfully completes our comprehensive shelter program, they have accomplished a series of steps to continue their journey to long-term self-sufficiency. Accomplishments include:

  • Safe Housing
  • Permanent, full-time employment
  • Safe, reliable child care or after-school care
  • Emergency savings fund of $1000+
  • A working, realistic budget
  • Reliable transportation

Once a family "graduates" and moves into their own home, they transition into A New Lease on Life aftercare program, which includes:

  • Professional case management support for one year
  • Help with emergent needs
  • Life skills workshops (Child care is provided.)
  • Peer support of fellow FPGNB alumni, as well as other supportive relationships.

A temporary home for children in foster care or for those experiencing housing instability. Many youths find themselves staying on friends' couches, sleeping at parks, or living out of cars. Our shelter offers a safe place with access to resources to help youth reach their housing goals.

  • Safety. Staff meet the immediate needs of each new arrival. Hygiene supplies, clothing, food, medicine, and school supplies help children feel settled and safe.
  • Support. Through trauma-informed care and Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) staff and counselors help youth heal from trauma and plan for their futures.
  • Normalcy. Opportunities to engage in activities typical for youth. Examples include school extracurricular options, summer activities, and shopping opportunities.

  • Youth in Foster Care. Emergency Shelter placement must be requested by the youth's DFPS caseworker or Child Placing Unit. Authorized personnel can send the State of Texas Common Application to the agency intake email.
  • Unaccompanied Youth. If you or someone you know is experiencing homelessness, complete this form to request temporary shelter placement.

A home for youth preparing to exit foster care. Residents benefit from targeted support to help them transition to adulthood. 

  • Support. Through trauma-informed care and Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) staff and counselors help youth heal from trauma and plan for their futures.
  • Academic Guidance. Case managers help monitor academic performance and guide youth in preparing for higher education or employment.
  • Life Skills. Residents benefit from training and education designed to facilitate independent living. Skills include budgeting, credit planning, resume writing, and interviewing.
  • Be aged 15-22 and in the foster care system.
  • Be enrolled in (or have completed) high school, a GED course, vocational program, college, university, or technical school.
  • Seek, obtain, or continue employment (if not enrolled in an educational program).
  • Participate in programs on education, vocational training, employment, and volunteer outreach.
  • Be capable of acquiring the skills necessary to become economically self-sufficient.
  • Live cooperatively and responsibly with other residents in the program.

Transitional Living Program admission must be initiated by the youth's DFPS caseworker or Child Placing Unit. Authorized personnel should send the State of Texas Common Application and psychological evaluation to the agency intake email.

First Footing program offers people experiencing homelessness a safe place to stay. Individuals undergo an interview process and if accepted, have 24 hour staff support. 

The program model is built to come alongside adults on their journey out of homelessness and into a safe, stable home with mental and physical health care, employability skills training, budgeting education, and housing navigation.

Building Brighter Communities is bringing access to these rent and utility assistance programs to members of our community who wouldn’t otherwise have been alerted to it or have access to it. Not only do we help identify programs an individual or family will be eligible for but we will also assist with the paperwork for signing up with these programs.

It can be confusing to find help for older adults and people with disabilities. Aging and Disability Resource Centers (ADRCs) are part of the No Wrong Door system, which is designed to streamline public access to long-term services and supports (LTSS).

ADRCs serve as a key point of access to person-centered LTSS specialized information, referral and assistance and provide one-stop access to information for people who need help finding LTSS.

ADRCs help cut through the confusing maze of funding sources, multiple intake systems, and eligibility processes.

Who Should Call an ADRC?

Finding help for older adults and people with disabilities can be overwhelming. When you call 855-YES-ADRC (855-937-2372), it becomes much easier. By making the call, you will talk to a trained professional who will guide you to the right service options to help meet your needs.

The Permanent Homes for Veterans program is an initiative designed to provide housing for veterans looking for stable, long-term solutions.

The program recognizes the need for safe and affordable housing for veterans who have served their country and works to provide them with the support and resources they need to succeed.

The program is unique in that it offers a two years mortgage-free home to the veteran after the successful completion of the program.

Through the Permanent Homes for Veterans program, veterans are given access to a range of resources and services designed to help them succeed in their new homes. 

Honorably discharged veterans, retirees or Reservists and National Guard that are currently serving can apply for a home through the Permanent Homes for Veterans program. All veterans that served honorably are eligible to apply, no matter what era they served (Vietnam, Korea, Desert Storm, Desert Shield, OEF, OIF).

Veterans do not have to be injured or have a deployment to apply. Surviving spouses of service members killed in combat or while deployed in the combat theater of operations and are not remarried or engaged to be married may also apply.

Case Management

Following the ACT model, we have case management teams that provide services to all of the clients assigned to the team. Each client has multiple case managers working with them on a weekly rotation.

Our clients benefit by having multiple direct care staff providing input and strategies to best assist them reach their goals. Our clients have continuity of care when a case manager may be absent due to illness or vacation, as well as moving to a different position and no longer providing case management services. Each team has a Team Leader who coordinates the recovery and treatment plan of each client with the case managers and coordinates with the other community providers the client is utilizing for services.

Psychiatrist

We have agreements with psychiatrists to see clients who are receiving services from True MHS. We do not provide psychiatric services directly through True MHS. Our agreements with psychiatrists enable us to schedule an initial appointment within a few days of intake to our case management services, rather than clients waiting several months for an initial appointment.

This is extremely beneficial for our new clients who begin our services following an inpatient hospital admission. The client can be seen within 7 days after their discharge date for their follow-up psychiatric appointment. Then the client will be scheduled with the psychiatrist for monthly follow-up appointments. If a client has an outpatient psychiatrist that they have a relationship with and want to continue their services, we are still able to provide case management services and the client does not need to change doctors.

To help our clients achieve success, our case managers:

  • Coordinate the transition from the hospital after discharge to the client’s home
  • Teach coping strategies for experienced symptoms
  • Teach awareness of triggers for experienced symptoms
  • Teach coping strategies to address triggers
  • Educate about the benefits of taking medications
  • Assist and educate clients to complete doctor appointments
  • Assist and educate clients to fill prescriptions at pharmacies
  • Substance abuse education and assistance with rehabilitation
  • Teach interpersonal and social skills
  • Help secure safe housing
  • Teach budgeting and money management skills
  • Educate about community resources and how to access them
  • Assist clients access resources for employment
  • Assist clients access resources for education
  • And teach our clients anything else they need for their recovery and success

In addition to case managers meeting directly with clients in the community, we provide 24-hour crisis support to assist our clients after business hours.

At Always Best Care Senior Services, our mission is to provide veterans with the most outstanding care possible, and also to assist them in obtaining the funds to pay for the care they need.

The Always Best Care Veterans Assistance Program helps some of America’s most deserving citizens remain in their homes longer while maintaining a healthy and safer lifestyle. Here’s how we help

At Always Best Care, we not only provide outstanding care for veterans, we also assist them in obtaining the funds to pay for the care they need. For example, if you choose to work with one of our resources, their process includes:

  • Thoroughly researching and reviewing all pertinent records and testimony, documenting medical conditions, need for care, military service, marital records, and financial status (if required).
  • Obtaining necessary documents from original and certified sources (this includes obtaining certified copies of military discharges).
  • Researching your particular situation and history with a view of selecting which VA disability program might be the most beneficial.
  • Preparing a written legal opinion regarding eligibility for the desired VA benefit and the anticipated amount of award.
  • If the legal opinion is positive, you may begin care with Always Best Care confident of your legal entitlement to VA benefits.
  • Preparing presenting and prosecuting a complete documented claim for the desired benefit.

SAMMinistries’ Transitional Living and Learning Center (TLLC) is home to 40 families as they work to overcome homelessness.

The TLLC provides housing, support, and resources to families (one or both parents plus at least one minor child) who show a commitment to gaining self-sufficiency.

The individual needs of all family members are supported for a two-year period, promoting the viability of the family as a whole while they transition out of homelessness.

Transitional Housing Residents:

  • Have a goal to work or attend school for at least 30 hours per week
  • Meet with Case Managers regularly to establish short and long-term goals
  • Participate in life skills classes: money management, parenting, conflict resolution, etc.

SAMMinistries is a Methodist Healthcare Ministries Funded Partner and is pleased to receive funding for the Integrated Health and Wellness Program which offers resources to improve the physical, mental, social, and emotional well-being of families living at the TLLC.

Must meet HUD definition as "literally homeless" and must be referred by the community's Coordinated Entry system.

Permanent Supportive Housing assists and empowers families to live as independently as possible. SAMMinistries has a permanent housing program that assists families with whom one member of the family has a disability. SAMMinistries also manages 100 set-aside housing vouchers to help families find permanent housing in the private rental market.

The Veterans’ Housing Stability Program (VHSP) provides comprehensive housing support to veterans or surviving spouses through homeless prevention, rapid re-housing and wrap-around services.

The Homeless Prevention Program provides:

The Rapid Re-Housing Program provides:

  • Assistance with the rental security deposit and utility connection
  • Up to 3 months rent assistance

The HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) program for homeless veterans combines Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) rental assistance with case management and clinical services provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) at VA medical centers and community-based outreach clinics.

SSVF, funded through the Department of Veteran Affairs, is a program designed to assist very low-income veteran families in obtaining permanent housing.

Under the program, participants receive client-centered case management, individualized housing stability counseling, assistance with obtaining public benefits, referrals to community agencies, and other support services as needed.

Eligible clients include:

  • Veteran families currently homeless staying in their cars, parks, abandoned buildings, airports, camping grounds, etc.
  • Currently living in their home but at risk of eviction
  • Veteran families currently homeless staying in a shelter, transitional housing, hotel, or motel.
  • Veteran families who are currently homeless, but scheduled to move into permanent housing within 90 days

The Rapid Re-Housing program reduces the amount of time a family experiences homelessness and rapidly re-houses families into permanent, affordable homes. Financial assistance is provided for up to 3 months along with 12 months of case management.

Rapid Re-Housing Program provides:

  • Assistance with deposit, rent, and utilities for up to 3 months
  • Case management with emphasis on budgeting and maintaining self-sufficiency for 12 months

Individuals and families are housed in apartments they select. (The apartment must meet HUD habitability standards and be within fair-market rent/rent reasonableness guidelines based upon household size.

SAMMinistries’ Rapid Re-housing program is partially funded by the City of San Antonio. We are grateful for their ongoing partnership.

 

The individual or family:

  • must be "literally homeless" by HUD definition (living in an emergency shelter, on the street, or in a place not meant for habitation).
  • Can be a family, couple, or individual
  • Must be willing to work with case manager for 12 months
  • Must have sustainable income with 60 days

Homelink is San Antonio and Bexar County’s local Coordinated Entry System – a uniform, community-wide approach to connect people who are literally homeless or at imminent risk of homelessness to housing resources.

If You are currently experiencing homelessness or are at risk of becoming homeless, Homelink can help by assessing your situation and connecting you with the most appropriate housing resource. Your first step is to connect to Homelink. You can connect to Homelink through an access point, street outreach, or emergency shelter. Next, a Homelink enrollment or assessment is initiated by walking into or calling any of the access points during designated times. 

It is important to note that Homelink matches you with an
appropriate housing solution based off of need, availability, & prioritization to meet the needs of the most vulnerable first.

This Homelink Access Point serves young adults 18-24.
