Foster A Child In Texas

- Access to the Shining Light Donation Center at the TruLight127 Office filled with clothing, hygiene products, school supplies, etc.

- 24/7 Parent Support for emergency situations
- Beautiful training and meeting facilities on the Jonathan's Place campus
TRAINING
Our training takes a comprehensive approach and requires families to complete a total of 40 hours of pre-service training and interactive training hours. Families complete annual training hours to continue their education.
SUPPORT
After a child is placed with a family, the goal is to provide unequaled support for the entire family. Our experienced and professional case managers are committed and provide in-home visits, identifying community resources, and act as the liaison between the family and the CPS caseworker. We also provide services such as Emergency Placement Kits and Project Foster Destiny as an ongoing support.
RECRUITMENT
We strive to find high-quality caregivers for the children we serve. The intended result of recruitment is to find a family who is motivated by love and committed to providing a safe, nurturing, and stable environment for a child. The knowledge and skills of the foster or adoptive parents are critical to the well-being of the children in their care.
How notice are you given to foster a child before the child arrives?
- Emergency Placements can come quickly. I often say that you are like an on-call physician. Once you are licensed you could start receiving calls the day. Planned placements take longer. In each case, your preferences make the determination on how fast children are placed in your home.
Can foster families adopt?
- Yes! Many families are interested in both fostering and adopting. They agree with the agency that the children’s needs come first. In most cases, this means helping prepare children for reunification with their birth family, mentoring the birth parents, or working toward a relative or kinship placement.
- When termination of parental rights is in the children’s best interest and adoption is their plan, then foster parents who have cared for the children will be given the opportunity to adopt. Dual certification of parents to both foster and adopt speeds up the placement process, reduces the number of moves a child makes, and allows relationships to evolve with the initial placement process. Nearly half the adoptions of children in DFPS foster care are by their foster families.
What are the chances statistically that I will be able to adopt my foster child?
- This is always asked and we wish we had a clear answer. When you enter the world of foster care you are working with other humans. We all come with our own baggage, our own assumptions, personalities, etc. Children in care have biological parents and biological family members who are given the chance to step up. Children whose parental rights are terminated and they are placed in your home are ready for adoption
Is there a min/max age for foster parents?
- Must be at least 21-years-old. Max age depends on the health and situation of the child in care.

- Yes, all vaccinations will need to be up-to-date and we will need to have documentation
Will my home be subject to scheduled or random inspections?
- Yes, from Licensing, CPS, and TruLight127. Not all at once and not random every month.
Adoption through Foster Care is very little to no cost. In most cases, children can meet certain criteria for subsidy that covers lawyer and court fees. This subsidy often provides a monthly stipend until age 18.
Mission work is one of the founding principles of our church, and there are many ways to get involved!
Little Free Food Pantry
What started as the Eagle Scout project of one of our high schoolers has grown into a service that provides critical aid to our community. Our Little Free Pantry makes deliveries every other week to several families in the area and also keeps a pantry stocked in our partnered Hill Country MHDD clinic for clients.
Act II Sewing
Act II Sewing is a group of ladies who meet on the third Tuesday of the month at 9:30 am to sew for a good cause. Some of their regular projects are stuffed animals for St. Jude Children’s Home, Presbyterian Children’s Home, and other organizations and occasions where children might need a bit of comfort.
They make clothing protectors, lap blankets, shawls, walker bags, and more for nursing home residents, hospice patients, and Meals on Wheels recipients. You don’t need to be skilled at sewing to help make these projects and more, just come by and lend a hand.

SALSA has aligned its work to that of the World Health Organization’s Eight Domains of Livability:
- Outdoor Spaces and Buildings
- Transportation
- Respect and Social Inclusion
- Housing and Built Environment
- Communication and Information
- Civic Participation and Employment
- Community Support and Health Services
- Social Participation
SALSA is a collective impact initiative. Collective impact describes an intentional way of working together and sharing information for the purpose of solving a complex problem. Proponents of collective impact believe that the approach is more likely to solve complex problems than if a single nonprofit were to approach the same problem(s) on its own.
SALSA participants are a combination of individuals and organizations, with representatives from the business community, local government, and the social sector. SALSA partners are working on issues of housing, transportation, socialization, engagement, health, and caregiver support.

How we Support:
The Green Beret Foundation is dedicated to caring for our Gold Star and Surviving Families as they are revered members of our community. The final sacrifice of their Green Berets causes us to pause, reflect, and give thanks for the freedoms we hold so dear.
Our mission is to help the family navigate their difficult journey, give them the tools they need, and empower them to take control of their future. In the immediate wake of the Green Beret’s death, we offer financial assistance to help ease the burden of the expenses the family may incur during this time.
Long term, we strive to maintain relationships with the family and communicate with the Special Forces Groups to identify any gaps we may be able to fill. We will always honor our fallen and support their families.

The GoodHood Immersions are designed to decrease the distance between people and places. Many of the problems facing our city are caused by a failure to see one another clearly.
During the Immersion, you will get the opportunity to spend time with new people, in a new place and get a new perspective on the Eastside of San Antonio. After a half-day of walking, talking, and eating, you will not only be able to see people and places differently but you will also be able to decrease the distance that divides us.
If you are interested in attending an Immersion or scheduling one for your small group, please email Charles Foltz with the Subject: Immersions.

Partnering with Project Transformation to host programming for children can help re-anchor your congregation in your neighborhood.
Through this partnership, site churches are empowered to better cultivate two key traits of discipleship: radical hospitality and active listening.
Site churches are trained each year in best practices for leveraging the program by one another and Project Transformation. First and foremost, church members and staff are able to display radical hospitality as they greet children and their families, lead chapel services during programming each week, invite families to worship, and plan and attend Family Fun Night events with the young adults. Beyond this, the site church also enters, with more resources, a relationship of active listening in order to better learn and understand the community’s needs and assets.
