VA’s Office of National Veterans Sports Programs and Special Events provides Veterans with opportunities for health and healing through adaptive sports and therapeutic art programs. These specialized rehabilitation events aim to optimize Veterans’ independence, community engagement, well-being, and quality of life. The programs are built on clinical expertise within VA, with essential support from Veteran Service Organizations, corporate sponsors, individual donors and community partners.
- Grant Program: The Grants for Adaptive Sports Programs for Veterans and service members with disabilities (ASG Program) provides grant funding to organizations to increase and expand the quantity and quality of sustainable adaptive sport activities that Veterans and service members with disabilities have to participate in physical activity including those for mental health issues within their home communities, as well as more advanced Paralympic and adaptive sport programs at the regional and national levels.
- Training Allowance: Interested in becoming a Paralympic athlete? The VA National Veterans Sports Programs and Special Events Office provides a monthly assistance allowance for Veterans with disabilities training in Paralympic sports, as well as certain Veterans with disabilities selected for or competing with the national Olympic Team, as authorized by 38 U.S.C. 322(d) and Section 703 of the Veterans’ Benefits Improvement Act of 2008.

The Prosthetic Foundation was established in 2010 as a 501 C (3) nonprofit organization to help uninsured and underinsured amputees throughout Texas. The Prosthetic Foundation is committed to ensuring amputees receive a prosthesis and the follow-up care essential to regaining mobility and independence.
The loss of a limb can create a severe challenge and prevent an amputee from being able to perform the activities of daily living that many of us take for granted. The physical and psychological independence that a prosthesis can provide not only affects the amputee but can make a world of difference for their family and everyone around them.
A prosthesis is also crucial in preventing additional health complications from being sedentary in a wheelchair.
If you are interested in volunteering with The Prosthetic Foundation, please contact us at (210) 237-4400.

Adults with special needs
The Adult Continuing Education (ACE) program offers tutoring services for adults with Down syndrome in reading, math, and writing.
All lessons are individualized to the level of each student. Each student gets his/her own academic binder with lessons chosen specifically for his/her abilities. This is an ideal one-on-one tutoring situation where the student receives individualized attention.
The process is simple. If a student is interested in participating in this program, an application is completed followed by an informal assessment by the director. This information is used to develop the academic lessons.
Students and tutors are matched based on personalities and availability of tutoring times. All lessons are created by the director.
Tutoring is available for those 18 years and older and is offered once a week for 90 minutes.
Volunteers are asked to complete an application and participate in an orientation.
Free.

Volunteering, at its heart, is the principle of donating time and energy for the benefit of other people in our community as a social responsibility rather than for any financial reward.
Lives are changed and communities are strengthened when we come together and bring our resources to serve those in need. We can't do this without you.
To learn of the different programs and how to volunteer for each one, please click the Apply Now and select the program of interest.

The Service & Leadership program identifies opportunities and provides training for individuals with disabilities who are interested in serving the San Antonio community by engaging in volunteerism, service on nonprofit boards, and participation in strategic conversations about the future of our community.
While there are other opportunities for people with disabilities to learn to advocate for themselves, there are few programs that expect, encourage, and empower these citizens to advocate for and serve others.

Volunteer for a disABILITYsa event or program:
There are a number of opportunities to engage with disABILITYsa through one-day events and program interactions. Click here for a list of events you can volunteer for.
Volunteer to support disABILITYsa outreach:
One of the best ways to learn about our organization and promote our mission within the San Antonio community is to serve as an outreach volunteer. This position requires a two hour training where we walk you through each of the disABILITYsa programs, show you how to set-up our information table, and prepare you to answer some basic questions about the organization regarding programs, volunteer opportunities, and ways others can get involved. You'll accompany us to various information fairs, and then once you're ready, you'll take off on your own. Outreach volunteers are a big part of fulfilling our mission to educate, advance, and engage.
Volunteer with a program:
Utilize your skills and expertise to help change a life or our community. These volunteer opportunities allow you to share your expertise and experiences with others in the community to help effect positive change.
Volunteer to serve on a Planning Team:
disABILITYsa programs would not exist if it weren't for the long-term commitment of those who are serving on our planning teams. From budget to logistics, our planning team members work to plan and implement the mission of disABILITYsa into our programs that benefit our community.
disABILITYsa Volunteer Team:
Join this team of individuals as we get together and volunteer in our local community. Volunteer service activities will be selected in areas of human services, arts, culture, animal services and more! disABILITYsa will work to provide the supports necessary for individuals of all abilities to participate.

You make the world a better place.
Volunteers of all kinds are important to us. As a volunteer, we want you to participate in a way that is meaningful to YOU. We are dedicated to working closely with you to identify your ideal project plan, specific experience and "take away" plus scheduling days, times and places that are most convenient for you.
There are several ways to volunteer at Mission Road:
- You’re the Expert
What is your passion? Expertise? Joy? Volunteer your time to play your musical instrument; build a bird house; teach us about the sun and stars; bake a cake; care for animals; teach us dances from your ancestors and on and on. Volunteering is about YOU! We love it all!
- On-Campus Group Volunteers
Large volunteer groups are welcome! Activities can include working directly with clients on craft projects, reading, singing, playing sports and games. Got rhythm? Volunteer to dance with clients at our frequent carnivals and parties.
Volunteers may also choose to help with the care and maintenance of Mission Road facilities - painting, gardening, light repairs, hanging Christmas lights, even harvesting olives in our 250-tree orchard.
- Off-Campus Group Volunteers
We love to be out and about. Our clients love to visit museums, the theater, historic sites, see movies, go bowling, and even volunteer for others - visiting senior centers, the Food Bank and baking cookies at the Ronald McDonald House. Where can you take us?
- Sponsors
We appreciate individual and corporate sponsors who may choose donate items such as tickets for community events, books, puzzles, crafts supplies, etc.. Monetary donations are appreciated to help cover transportation expenses, meals and other expenses for off campus experiences - including over-night vacations for our residents.
- Individual Volunteer
An individual may assist in on-campus programming; such as arts and crafts classes, music lessons, tutoring, field trips, birthday parties, fundraisers, holiday parties and much more.
- Shindig, Job Luncheon and Club Unicorn
Individuals can volunteer with Mission Road's client and fundraising events. Dance with our clients, serve popcorn or pizza or serve on our special fundraising committees including Underwriting and Table Sponsor recruitment, Auction Donation procurement, Decor, Guest Registration, etc.
Complete our online Volunteer Form found here.
Upon submission, a team member will contact you to help coordinate a volunteer activity that meets your expectations and provides your volunteers with a memorable and productive experience.

Whether you’re interested in helping at an event, starting a social or support group, lending an administrative hand, creating a give back event, performing outreach to community members, or joining an event committee, we value your time and energy.
